Florida -½ +180 over Boston (R)

1:00 PM EST. This game has the best first line on the ice wearing white. Matthew Tkachuk is the finest playmaker in the building, sitting on 25 points with 21 of them assists, and his brother Brady leads Florida with 10 goals while playing like the crease owes him money. With Sam Bennett doing the heavy lifting between them, that trio tilts the rink every single shift. Florida has won seven of its last ten because the scoring comes in layers: Brady with 10, Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart with nine apiece, and Seth Jones quarterbacking everything from the blue line with 20 points of his own.

Then there is the power play, which is less a unit than a firing squad. Florida's first group, both Tkachuks with Reinhart, Verhaeghe and Jones, has outscored opponents 17-1 in its minutes together this season. Seventeen to one. Boston, meanwhile, is trying to patch the middle of its lineup at the worst possible moment: James Hagens, who was leading every rookie in the league with 12 points, went on injured reserve Saturday with a bad back, and Matthew Poitras is out with a broken nose. The Bruins are leaning on call ups and spare parts down centre ice while Florida rolls three lines that can all finish. Every penalty Boston takes is a coin flip against that top unit, and every shift the Bruins' patched middle takes against the Tkachuk line is a shift spent chasing.

Florida's whole identity suits a regulation bet, too. This team is built to grab a lead and then sit on your chest for forty minutes: heavy forecheck, long offensive zone shifts, sticks in every lane, and a room full of veterans who treat a one goal third period like a screensaver. They won the last meeting between these two 2-1, which is the exact shape this bet wants. The Panthers do not need overtime heroics or a shootout coin flip. They need their top end to do what it has done all month, score early, cash a power play, and squeeze the life out of the clock.

Boston is favoured because of the building and the record, not because it has better players at the top of the lineup today. At +180 you are being paid handsomely to back the team with the best line in hockey, the most dangerous power play in this matchup, and a closer's mentality, against a home side patching holes down the middle.
