Boston -½ +145 over Anaheim
10:00 PM EST. Regulation only. The Bruins are playing some strong hockey right now, and we're going to back them to get this done in 60 minutes. Boston has won three in a row, it has scored 17 goals in those three games, and it opened this West Coast swing on Tuesday night with a 6-3 win in San Jose, a game that marked Charlie McAvoy's return to the lineup — he scored in his season debut, Fraser Minten added two, and Jeremy Swayman made 35 saves. That's a confident, rolling team walking into Anaheim for the second game of this trip, against a Ducks team playing the final game of its homestand before heading east for four games on the road. We have always liked fading a team in that last game before a road trip, and that's the spot Anaheim is in tonight.
The analytics strengthen Boston's case considerably, especially at 5-on-5, which is where a regulation bet is won or lost. Boston owns a 70.37% goals-for share at 5-on-5, outscoring its opponents 19-8. Anaheim, despite its 4-2 record, sits at just 45.45% at 5-on-5, having been outscored 12-10. In other words, the Ducks' record is flattering them, while the Bruins' underlying game matches their results. Boston also holds the edge in shot attempts (49.37% to 47.17%), unblocked attempts (50.54% to 48.54%) and scoring chances (51.26% to 46.69%), and the goaltending gap at 5-on-5 is enormous, with Boston's high-danger save percentage at 93.62 compared to Anaheim's 83.33. Add in an Anaheim team that just lost at home to a previously winless Calgary club and is banged up in its forward group, and the Bruins have advantages in form, in net, and under the hood.
That 5-on-5 edge is exactly why we're comfortable taking the regulation price instead of laying a bigger number on the moneyline and inviting overtime to decide our fate. Boston doesn't win games by hanging around and hoping. It outscores teams at even strength, its goaltending is erasing high-danger chances, and it's catching Anaheim at the end of a homestand with a cross-country trip staring it in the face. At +145, we don't need overtime, we don't need a shootout, and we don't need any help. We just need the better 5-on-5 team to play like it for 60 minutes
Our Pick
Boston -½ +145 (Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.90)
