Anaheim -105 over Vegas
NHL Playoff Series Game 3
Series tied 1-1
9:30 PM EST. Vegas closed around a -150 favorite in Game 1 and crept even higher in Game 2 on home ice, yet anyone watching those games closely saw Anaheim carry the play for long stretches. The Ducks were faster, hungrier and generated the better quality chances in both contests. So now the series shifts to Anaheim and suddenly the price is basically a pick’em? That doesn’t add up. If Vegas was laying serious wood at home while getting outplayed, then Anaheim should logically be favored much higher back on its own ice after proving it can dictate the pace against this opponent. Instead, the market is still pricing Vegas like the superior team based more on reputation than what’s actually unfolding on the ice. That creates value and plenty of it.
Anaheim already proved in the opening round that this is not some cute Cinderella story. They knocked out Edmonton in six games and did it by beating the Oilers at their own game. Edmonton entered the playoffs viewed as one of the elite offensive machines in hockey and Anaheim neutralized them while still creating offense of its own. That series gave the Ducks confidence and belief, and now they’re carrying that same form into this matchup. Vegas survived Utah in Round 1, but even there the Knights were hardly dominant. In fact, Utah controlled large portions of that series and Vegas often looked vulnerable defensively and disconnected offensively. Anaheim has been the better team in this series through two games and now gets last change, crowd energy and home ice behind them. The Ducks are not sneaking up on anyone anymore. They’re simply playing better hockey.
We also can’t ignore the strange dynamic surrounding Vegas after the late-season firing of Bruce Cassidy and the hiring of John Tortorella. Vegas built its identity over the years on pace, pressure and offensive aggression, but Tortorella has spent his entire coaching life trying to grind games down into defensive trench warfare. That’s his personality and always has been. He wants teams playing “his way,” regardless of personnel, and history shows that eventually players tune him out. Right now you can already see the confusion. Vegas looks hesitant offensively and far less dangerous than the roster suggests it should be. Instead of attacking naturally, they look like a team overthinking every puck touch. Tortorella may eventually get buy-in, but in the middle of a playoff run is a terrible time to reinvent a team’s identity. Anaheim is the looser, faster and more confident side right now and the price simply does not reflect it.
