NHL Western Conference Quarterfinal

Game 4

Calgary -1½ +120 over Dallas

9:30 PM EST. OT Included. Yes, we have regrets. We painfully regret not playing the Blues yesterday. We regret not playing Carolina or the Kings yesterday. One of the toughest things to do when betting on sports is sticking to your guns. One’s mind can easily be poisoned by watching games. After L.A. lost 6-0 and 8-2 to Edmonton, it was so damn hard to come back on them and it cost us two games. Ditto with the rest. We also bet Calgary in Games 2 & 3 and then laid off in Game 4 (after ripping up both tickets) instead of sticking with it when they went into Dallas and skated circles around this imposter. We’re back on the horse here because this is as big a mismatch as Colorado/Nashville.

Did you know that Dallas played 21 extra time games over the course of this season and won 15 of those 21 games? In other words, they made the playoffs because of a skills contest in which they were luckier than most. The Stars made the playoffs by three points. If the NHL used any other system but a skills contest to decide playoff teams on the bubble, the Stars would have been watching these playoffs from the rail. This is not a playoff team. They feature one line and a hot goalie. Its bottom nine forwards couldn’t crack Arizona’s lineup. They need Jake Oettinger to stand on his fu**ing head to lose by three goals.

They have a coach, Rick Bowness, who managed to parlay fake bubble success into a full-time head coaching gig. Now let’s play the hits of his NHL head coaching career:

-Bowness left the Bruins in 1992 after a conference final appearance to coach a historically awful Ottawa Senators expansion team that fudged their expansion draft because they couldn’t even figure out how to work a laptop properly.

-He coached an Islanders team in 1997–98 owned by a literal con artist, which was entirely because Mike Milbury didn’t want to coach anymore. He was eventually fired and replaced by- wait for it- Mike Milbury.

-Became interim coach of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2004, only to be demoted because Wayne Gretzky wanted to try his hand at failing at something for once. That’s it; that’s his entire head coaching resume. His contracts are probably negotiated by a temp agency.

Who are those bottom nine you ask? Michael Raffl- who you forgot existed- and Marion Studenic - who you never knew existed. Luke Glendening. It’s always a foreboding sign when the current-day Red Wings think a player stinks. Should we go on? Tyler Seguin is broken in five places. Joe Pavelski will be on a milk carton soon because we’ll never see him again. Alex Radulov is toast. This is the worst playoff team in 100 years. Back then, every team made the playoffs. Now all we need is Calgary to win by 2 to cash a ticket at plus money? Get in line.
