10:05 PM EST. We faded the Hurricanes last night and wrote the following:

The Hurricanes are good. They are a top-ranked analytic team in several categories and they dominate almost every game for long stretches. The Canes are 6-5-1 and deserved better in a 3-2 loss to Boston on Tuesday, when they outshot the B’s 44-31. That’s nice but it matters not because for Carolina, as nothing has changed when it comes to its putrid goaltending. You cannot win more games than you lose without good goaltending. Goaltending is the #1 deciding factor in games and we’ll stress that until we are blue in the face.

Last night Carolina outshot the ‘Yotes 51-25 (!) and lost 4-3. If the Hurricanes had a goaltender they would be the best team in hockey, as they lead the NHL in Corsi For %, shots on goal, scoring chances and many more categories but they are .500 because they have no goaltending.

Put the Vegas Golden Nights in that same category. Vegas is playing great hockey, night in and night out but both Malcolm Subban and Marc Andre Fleury can’t stop a puck. Fleury comes in with an .888 SV % while Subban comes in with a SV% of .881. With the amount of chances the Hurricanes create, we have to trust they’ll bury a few past whatever stiff the Knights go with.

Vegas, too, creates chances and while MAF and Subban are horrible, the Scott Darling/Petr Mrazek tandem is worse. Scott Darling figures to get the call here after another lousy effort by Mrazek last night and why the Hurricanes don’t make Curtis McElhinney their #1 is mind-boggling but we couldn’t give a rat’s ass. What we know for sure is that this is such a great total that it must be played and frankly, we would be shocked if these two teams don’t combine to score 6 after one period or early in the second, let alone 60 minutes.
