The Panthers went into Washington last night and beat the Caps 6-5 in a shootout. They also scored five on Philadelphia and four on the Jackets but last night was their first win of the year. Why? James Reimer was pulled last night and now has an .867 SV%. Michael Hutchison brings a SV% of .838 and he figures to get this call but it matters not. When a team features weak goaltending, they are always in danger of losing far more games than they win and that applies to the Panthers. While the same can be said about Detroit’s goaltending, the Red Wings are not the heavily favored team here. Furthermore, Detroit remains the only winless team in the NHL and they’re not that bad. They’ve already played Toronto, Montreal, Boston and Tampa and they catch the Panthers at a great time after Florida pulled off an upset in Washington last night. The Red Wings are coming off a spirited loss in Tampa on Thursday and while no loss is a good one, it was a moral victory that proved they can compete with some of the best teams. They also competed against Toronto and didn’t look out of place in that one either.
