South Alabama +6½ over Louisiana Tech
3:00 PM EST. Louisiana Tech has been one of the best investments in college football this season, going 6-1 against the spread. The Bulldogs have won their last two games by a combined 50-0, shutting out UL-Monroe and Old Dominion while barely breaking a sweat. Their defense has been outstanding, their quarterback has been extremely efficient, and they've made their supporters plenty of money. What's not to like? Well, the price, for starters. When a team starts winning and covering with this kind of regularity, the market takes notice, and the bargain that existed a month ago disappears. Louisiana Tech is no longer flying under the radar. The Bulldogs are now a team that bettors are actively looking to back, and that's an entirely different proposition.
Consider what the market has just witnessed. Louisiana Tech completely dismantled Old Dominion last week, holding the Monarchs to minus-12 rushing yards and outgaining them 438-141 in a 26-0 victory. That followed another shutout against UL-Monroe. Two consecutive games without allowing a point will get anyone's attention, particularly when the offense is operating efficiently behind Blake Baker, who has completed more than 72% of his passes with 10 touchdowns against just one interception. Everything about Louisiana Tech looks attractive right now, and that's precisely why we're interested in taking the other side. The Bulldogs have become an easy team to endorse, but easy endorsements rarely come with attractive prices.
South Alabama, meanwhile, arrives home following a disappointing 20-13 loss at Marshall. The Jaguars managed just 13 points after putting up 108 combined in their previous two conference games. Quarterback Jared Hollins completed only 12 of 33 passes for 148 yards, and the offense looked nothing like the unit that had been scoring at will. Naturally, that performance has done little to inspire confidence in South Alabama, particularly with Louisiana Tech coming to town sporting consecutive shutouts. But we're not buying the idea that one poor offensive performance suddenly defines the Jaguars. South Alabama was competitive throughout the Marshall game, tied it in the fourth quarter, and ultimately lost on a late touchdown. That's hardly the same as getting run out of the building.
There's also a scheduling component that deserves attention. South Alabama has been away from home for two consecutive games and now returns with additional preparation time. Louisiana Tech, on the other hand, is stepping onto the road after two comfortable home victories in which it faced very little adversity. That's a considerable change in circumstances. The Bulldogs have been dictating terms against overmatched opponents, but winning comfortably at home and laying nearly a touchdown on the road against a conference opponent are two very different assignments. South Alabama has a capable running game with Keenan Phillips and PJ Martin, and the Jaguars don't need Hollins to produce a spectacular afternoon to remain within this number.
What makes this matchup particularly appealing is the contrast in public perception. Louisiana Tech couldn't look much better right now, while South Alabama couldn't have picked a worse time to produce its least impressive offensive performance in weeks. One team has been cashing tickets, recording shutouts, and climbing in everyone's estimation. The other is coming off an ugly loss with questions surrounding its quarterback. The market has plenty of reasons to support Louisiana Tech, and those reasons are already baked into the number. We're not suggesting the Bulldogs are fraudulent or that their defensive improvement isn't legitimate. We're suggesting that bettors are being asked to pay a premium for everything Louisiana Tech has already accomplished.
At the end of the day, we're getting 6½ points with a South Alabama team returning home against an opponent whose recent results have made it extremely fashionable. Louisiana Tech may very well win this game. The Bulldogs might even be the better team. Neither point has much relevance to our position. The question is whether Louisiana Tech deserves to be laying nearly a touchdown on the road after two performances that have sent its market value soaring. We don't believe it does. South Alabama has enough offensive capability to make this competitive, and the Jaguars are catching the Bulldogs at a time when expectations are approaching their highest point of the season. We'll take the home underdog and let the Louisiana Tech bandwagon carry the weight of those expectations.
Our Pick
