Sacramento St. +8½ -110 over Bowling Green
12:00 PM EST. There probably won't be a bidding war among television networks for the rights to Sacramento State versus Bowling Green, but fortunately, we're not looking for entertainment. We're looking for bad numbers, and asking Bowling Green to win a football game by more than a touchdown certainly qualifies.
Both teams are 1-4, but apparently Bowling Green's victory over Miami of Ohio last week has transformed the Falcons into a MAC powerhouse overnight. Let's not get carried away. This is still a team with one victory in five games, an offense that has struggled to establish a running game, and exactly two rushing touchdowns all season. One decent afternoon doesn't suddenly turn a struggling football program into something resembling Ohio State.
The Falcons' defense deserves some credit. They've recorded six sacks in each of their last two games, and their defensive front has been the most productive part of this team. But there's a difference between having an effective pass rush and being worthy of laying 8½ points. Bowling Green still has plenty of offensive limitations, and those become particularly important when the market starts asking for margin.
Sacramento State, meanwhile, comes in off a bye week, giving first-year head coach Alonzo Carter two full weeks to prepare. The Hornets have been competitive through the air, averaging 216 passing yards per game, with Matthew Coleman and Onterrio Smith Jr. providing legitimate receiving threats. Turnovers have been a problem, but this is also a team making the adjustment to FBS football and its first season in the MAC. Growing pains were inevitable, and the market has already priced Sacramento State like a program that doesn't belong.
There's also the weather to consider. Windy conditions are expected in Bowling Green, and that's hardly ideal for an offensively challenged favorite laying more than a touchdown. Strong winds can disrupt the passing game, complicate special teams and make explosive plays more difficult to manufacture. Sacramento State has already blocked three punts this season, so the Hornets are capable of creating some special-teams chaos of their own.
The Falcons are coming off an emotional conference victory, while Sacramento State has had an extra week to prepare and arrives with absolutely nobody expecting much. That's a dangerous combination when the favorite is being asked to win comfortably despite having done very little to justify that kind of respect.
Bowling Green might be the better team, but the difference between these two programs isn't nearly as wide as this number suggests. Sacramento State is being discounted too heavily, and we'll gladly take the 8½ points.
