Portland +127 over L.A. Lakers
11:00 PM EST. Two unbeaten teams, one mispriced dog — and the mispricing is in the possession battle. Portland (2-0) is grabbing 50.5 rebounds a game while the Lakers (3-0) are pulling down just 37, dead last in the league. The Blazers are also holding opponents to 101.5 points a night on 41.1 percent shooting and 22.2 percent from deep, while scoring 126 themselves. That's not a fluke profile through two games; that's a team that wins the glass, defends the arc, and gets extra possessions. The Lakers' offence is spectacular, but spectacular offences still need the ball, and Portland is the team taking it away from them. We are taking the team that controls the game's currency.
Portland's new backcourt is the reason the offence works. Damian Lillard is averaging 22 a game, Deni Avdija is at 22 points and 8.5 rebounds as a point-forward, and Ja Morant is pushing the pace and setting the table (7.5 assists). The Blazers beat Phoenix and Sacramento to get here, and they've won 12 of their last 16 going back into last season — this isn't a team that just got hot for a weekend. Against a Lakers team that gives up 115 a night and bleeds on the boards, Portland's formula travels: run, rebound, and let Lillard and Avdija hunt mismatches late.
Here's the sober counterweight — numberFire gives the Lakers a 69.8 percent chance to win outright, and it's not hard to see why. Luka Doncic is averaging 34.3 points, Austin Reaves 26.7, and together they're a 61-point nightly problem; the Lakers shoot 42.1 percent from three as a team and score 128 a night on 54.5 percent shooting. At home, in a late tip off , with that kind of firepower, the Lakers don't need many possessions to cover a spread — they just need Doncic to be Doncic.
And the honest counters keep coming: Portland is missing Shaedon Sharpe (knee, out), Scoot Henderson is questionable with an ankle, and the Blazers' depth behind the new backcourt is thin. The Lakers' rebounding weakness is the crack in the armour, but Doncic covers a lot of cracks. Still, the better price is on the team winning the glass and defending the arc, against a favourite whose own numbers say it can't rebound.
