NBA Play Off series Game 4

New York leads series 3-0

3:30 PM EST. The classic zigzag is in play here. Last game, the entire market rushed to back Philadelphia 76ers after it was announced that New York Knicks would be missing a key piece. The line exploded from roughly 1½ to 4½, Philadelphia jumped out early, and everyone holding a Sixers ticket started feeling pretty smart. Then New York rallied, closed strong again, and suddenly the entire mood around this series shifted.

Now the market is switching sides again, and that’s one of the oldest mistakes in sports betting.

Bettors react emotionally to what they just watched. Philadelphia blew a lead, New York won again, and now the natural instinct is to abandon the Sixers and jump back onto the Knicks. That’s how the market constantly ends up buying high and selling low. If you faded New York during this run, you’ve been ripping up tickets every night. Eventually people stop fighting it and climb aboard. That’s exactly what oddsmakers expect.

The thing is, this series has been much more competitive than the standings suggest. Philadelphia has had stretches where they’ve controlled play, controlled tempo, and looked fully capable of winning these games. Even in the latest loss, the Sixers were right there before things unraveled late. Again. That’s been the story — not domination, but failure to finish possessions, failure to finish quarters, and failure to close games.

Meanwhile, the Knicks are getting enormous credit right now for their late-game execution and defensive intensity. Fair enough. They’ve earned it. But now the market is pricing New York at peak confidence levels. Every fourth-quarter stop, every Brunson dagger, every highlight package adds fuel to the public perception that the Knicks are inevitable.

That creates value on the other side.

Philadelphia now returns to the role nobody wants — the desperate team everyone has given up on. Down 3-0, hearing about how the Knicks are heading to the conference finals, listening to analysts talk about toughness, chemistry, and defense. That all sounds great until the next game tips off and the underdog starts playing free while the favorite starts feeling the pressure of closing the series.

The Sixers also have enough talent to make this dangerous. Joel Embiid is still capable of taking over stretches of a game, and Paul George isn’t going to disappear offensively forever. Philadelphia has not played nearly well enough for four quarters, but they’ve shown enough in stretches to suggest this number has drifted too far based on recency bias.

This is not about saying Philadelphia suddenly becomes the better team. It’s about recognizing when the market has fully committed to one side emotionally. New York has become the trendy side, the safe side, the side everyone feels comfortable betting after watching the last few games. That’s usually when the value shifts the other way..
