Washington -1½ +270 over Atlanta

6:45 PM EST. Jake Irvin (RHP- WSH, 5.67 ERA) takes the mound for Washington against AJ Smith-Shawver (RHP- ATL, 6.23 ERA) of Atlanta. Irvin's current ERA is poor, but his strikeout ability has remained useful, with 72 punchouts across 71.1 innings, while his 1.36 WHIP is considerably more manageable than the ERA suggests. His 9.1 K/9 gives Washington a legitimate swing-and-miss element, and that is important when backing a substantial reverse run-line number.

Smith-Shawver's 6.23 ERA is actually worse than Irvin's, and the underlying Statcast numbers give Washington another reason to take the aggressive position with the home side. His 2026 xERA sits at 4.94, but the combination of a 15.9% strikeout rate and 12.7% walk rate leaves very little margin for error. The walks are particularly concerning because they create scoring opportunities without requiring Atlanta's opponents to string together a series of hits.

There is also a significant difference in the quality of the recent work. Irvin has struck out 13 batters over his last three starts, while Smith-Shawver has produced only six strikeouts across his two most recent major-league starts. Smith-Shawver's latest two outings have also resulted in seven earned runs over 9.1 innings, with six walks against six strikeouts. That is not the profile of a pitcher deserving to be treated as a substantial favorite on the road.

Washington does not need to be priced like the superior baseball club; the wager is built around getting a beefed-up number with the home underdog in a matchup where neither starting pitcher has established enough current dominance to justify laying a heavy price with Atlanta. Irvin's strikeout rate gives Washington a better foundation than his ERA suggests, while Smith-Shawver's elevated walk rate can put Atlanta in trouble without requiring Washington to generate a barrage of offense. This number is just too good to pass on!
