4:10 PM EST. We are looking to Seattle in this matchup because the pitching numbers make this considerably closer than the surface ERA comparison suggests. Bryan Woo has been much better at limiting free passes than Luzardo, with a 1.89 BB/9 and a 4.72 K/BB ratio over his current body of work. His recent starts also show improved command, allowing just three walks across his last four outings while giving up two earned runs or fewer in three of them. Woo's 8.91 K/9 gives him enough swing-and-miss ability to work through a Philadelphia lineup that will have difficulty manufacturing extended innings without the benefit of free baserunners.

Luzardo is certainly pitching well overall, but the underlying strikeout numbers are not enough to make this a one-sided pitching matchup. He has struck out 37 batters in 27? innings during August, including 12 against Toronto and nine against both Minnesota and St. Louis, while walking only six. That is excellent recent form, but his most recent outing also showed that there is some vulnerability, with four earned runs allowed in 5? innings. Seattle gets the right kind of starter to make this a competitive game, and Woo's combination of command and strikeout ability gives us a legitimate reason to take the home side rather than simply paying the premium for Luzardo. Seattle is our side today.
