Washington counters with Cade Cavalli, who continues to regain form following his lengthy recovery from Tommy John surgery. The former top prospect has quietly put together a respectable season, striking out nearly ten batters per nine innings while generating a healthy ground-ball rate. His ERA sits just under 4.00, and his supporting metrics suggest he's been a reliable mid-rotation starter. Cavalli's fastball velocity has returned, and he is beginning to look more like the pitcher Washington envisioned before the injury.

The market is giving Tampa Bay its usual respect because of organizational reputation and a bullpen that has traditionally been a strength. However, this price feels light on Washington and heavy on the Rays. The Nationals hold a clear advantage in starting pitching volume, and Cavalli's ability to work deep into games should lessen Tampa Bay's bullpen edge.
