San Diego over Toronto

8:40 PM EST. With Yu Darvish on the IL, the Padres will send 25-year-old Randy Vásquez (RHP - SD) out for his first big league start of the season after he was acquired from the Yankees in the offseason. There was some thought that Vásquez may have a spot in the Friars’ rotation coming into the spring, but he did not make the cut. However, that does not mean there isn’t talent here. Vásquez started five games for the Yanks last season while also making six other appearances, and he looked the part with 33 strikeouts in 37.2 innings. Vásquez brings a four-pitch mix with his velocity hitting as high as 97, but it’s his breaking ball that is his bread and butter. Vásquez has pitched 11.1 innings for Triple-A El Paso this season, and he’s recorded 13 Ks to 4 BBs.

The Blue Jays took game one of this series last night in a 5-1 final, and they’ll send Opening Day starter Jose Berrios out for his fourth turn of the season. Berrios is 3-0, and he brings a sparkling ERA of 1.05 into this game, but a closer look shows that his underlying numbers do not support such success on paper. Most notably, Berrios’ xERA is an inflated 4.41, and he’s been one of the luckiest starters thus far with a strand rate of 99.2%. In his 25.2 innings pitched, Berrios has 21 punchouts to seven walks, and while he’s coming off his strongest start of the season, it was against the lowly Rockies, so forgive us if we aren’t going to get too excited about it. Berrios is a "sell high" candidate, and we’re not going to miss that opportunity today.
