Boston -1½ +110 over Chicago

7:15 PM EST. Josh Winckowski (RHP - BOS) earned his first major league win by pitching five scoreless innings against the A’s (4 H, 1 BB, 3 K). Even though Boston is expecting some starting pitchers back soon, Winckowski could squeeze in one or two more starts before returning to AAA-Worcester, where he has pitched well (3.38 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 43/8 K/BB in 42.2 IP). Given that success, Winckowski, who came to Boston with OF/1B Franchy Cordero and three minor leaguers in the Andrew Benintendi deal, may technically be ahead of RHP Kutter Crawford on the organization’s starting pitching depth chart, notwithstanding Crawford’s somewhat stunning similar performance against the Mariners a few days earlier. Nonetheless, this has nothing to do with getting behind Winckowski and everything to do with fading Chicago’s starter

Kudos to the Cubbies for winning three in a row and six of 10 but a team this weak cannot sustain runs of .600 ball over an extended period of time. Overall, the Cubs are playing .400 ball, which is a more accurate reflection of who they are. Point being, they are in line for a string of losses and with Alec Mills (RHP -CHC) taking the hill, we’ll expect the Cubs to go back to being the Cubs today.

Mills is a starter turned reliever, turned starter again because the club has no idea where or how to use such a weak skill set. Mills throws 88 MPH on his best day. That’s the speed of a crafty lefty but he’s a non-crafty righty. He’s appeared in six games this year, one as a starter, and has a horrible swing and miss rate of 7%. In his last game, his only start of the year, he had a swing and miss rate of 2%. An outfielder playing for the Welland Jackfish could have a swing and miss rate of 2%. Alec Mills is a warm body that will face a Red Sox team that is first in the majors in many offensive categories against righties. Alec Mills is a horrible starter that must be faded.
