WASHINGTON +140 over Atlanta

6:05 PM EST. Austin Voth (RHP - WAS) is not a good pitcher. Furthermore, the Nationals are in last place in the NL East with a 16-25 record. After winning the World Series last year, one could argue that the Nats are not mentally checked in this season but if you watch them play, that’s a hard argument to agree with. They play hard and they want to win but they are not getting the desired results. A visit from the first place Braves figures to fire them up. Incidentally, Voth is 0-5 with a 8.26/6.11 ERA/xERA split so some ERA regression is in place. If Voth gets knocked out in the first three innings, so be it, as this wager has nothing to do with getting behind him.

Atlanta scored 29 runs last night. 29 runs at this level will indeed resonate in the market. We’ll suggest that 29 runs is a very long night no matter what side of it the players are on. The Braves will now travel to Washington for an early evening start. In a year with double-headers galore and watered down rotations, every single team in the majors need starters. This season, starters have been on a shorter leash than ever before, which is another reason that every team is in desperate need for bodies in the bullpen and in the rotation. Enter Robert Erlin (LHP - ATL) .

Robert Erlin was released by the Pirates. Now, we’re not scientists but seriously, how bad does one have to be to be released by the Pirates in August when bodies are scarce? The Pirates are going nowhere fast and yet they still didn’t want Erlin to eat any innings. They didn’t even try and trade him and if they did, there were no takers. Eventually, Atlanta picked him up off the waiver wire. Erlin is a soft-tossing swingman that has been used in both the rotation and the pen, where he was hit hard all of last season and this season too. He spent the 2nd half last year as a shuttle piece. He throws 88 MPH with a 6.2% swing and miss rate and posted an ERA of over 7 covering his last five appearances. Incidentally, the Nationals rank 2nd in OPS v lefties with only the South Side posting a better OPS against left-handers. Now Erlin is favored like he’s Chris Paddack. Win or lose, this price on Atlanta and Erlin here is absurd.
