7:10 PM EST, After a couple of long days in Buffalo, capped by yesterday’s double-header sweep at the hands of the Blue Jays, the Phillies head to Atlanta with their heads and stock down to face what is clearly one of the best pitchers in baseball so far this year. Max Fried (LHP - ATL) has a 9/28 BB/K split in 29 innings with an absolute elite 59% groundball rate, an elite 14% swing and miss rate and an elite 0.90 WHIP. His 1.24 ERA is elite and so is his xERA of 3.10. However, the Phillies have been great against southpaws with an 889 OPS. Furthermore, Max Fried’s consistently outrageous HR/F and line drive after line drive seems like a recipe for continued ERA/xERA, WHIP/xWHIP disparity. Max Fried is definitely good but Aaron Nola (RHP - PHI) just might be the new standard in MLB starting pitchers.

Aaron Nola might indeed be the best starter in the game that is not priced like it here. Aaron Nola owns a well-deserved 2.05 ERA and off the charts WHIP of 0.65 after four starts. Interestingly, Nola's skills have been even better than that. In fact, they have been the best in MLB: 15.1 K’s/9, 0.8 BB’s/9 and 2.17 xERA. His skills have the full backing of his 17.3% swing and miss rate and 67% first-pitch strike rate. Nola is not only primed for a big season, there’s nobody better right now. Finally, we turn to the bats and we already mentioned that Philly has been torching lefties. By contrast, Atlanta ranks 28th out of 30 teams in OPS against southpaws and will now be facing the best there is.
