2:20 PM EST. Much like yesterday when we didn’t really support Anibal Sanchez of the Nats, the value was too great against Jon Lester so we pulled the trigger. The Nats scored nine times, knocked Lester out early and cruised to an easy win. We’re not suggesting that will happen here but the value is just as great and maybe even better, as Jose Quintana (LHP - CHC) favored in this range against the hottest hitting team in the majors is bordering on absurd.

Before we get to Quintana, we’ll once again say that we’re not thrilled about getting behind another second tier pitcher on the Nationals. Joe Ross (RHP - WAS) gets this start and we’ll let the chips fall where they may because this wager is more about getting behind Washington’s offense at a great price while fading Quintana. Ross has made just five starts this year over his 23 appearances covering just 46 frames. Recovery from July 2017 Tommy John surgery cost him the 2018 season, save a three-start September cameo. The skills he flashed then are irrelevant, but the velocity is encouraging. He'll start here looking to recapture the 2016 skills that previously had our attention. Absolutely, we’re willing to gamble here on Ross.

Jose Quintana’s stock is through the roof right now, as he’s allowed just four earned runs combined over his last four starts covering 26 innings! Dude also has a BB/K split of 3/36 over his last 31 frames to go along with a 2.05 ERA. It’s all very nice but we’re not buying it. It was less than six weeks ago that Joe Maddon was talking about moving Quintana to the bullpen. During this temporary resurgence, Quintana has faced a slew of reeling teams. Since July 4th, he’s faced the Pirates three times, the Crew twice, the Phillies once and San Diego once. His 10% swing and miss rate over his last seven games do not come close to supporting the strikeouts that he’s registering. The Cubbies and Quintana are now spotting a big price to a team that is seeing beach balls at the plate. That’s something we cannot pass on.
