8:40 PM EST. On August 13, 11 days ago, manager Alex Cora said that Nathan Eovaldi (RHP - BOS) has a “pretty good chance” of serving as a starter for the remainder of the season. On August 18th against Baltimore, Eovaldi made his first start since mid-April and scuffed badly by going two innings, allowing five runs while walking three and striking out one. Eovaldi has had far more disasters than gems in his eight year career. He’s also been on six different teams because few want him. Seems fair to say that Eovaldi’s return from Tommy John surgery went well last year with career-best skills across the board but that was an outlier and now he’s back to being Nathan Eovaldi. He’s starting because David Price, Andrew Cashner and Chris Sale are all on the rack. And if we were to remind you that he lost his starting job back in April, would that temper expectations as much as last year’s flukey resurgence raises them? Boston’s offense is dangerous but we like the edge we have on the mound.

Dinelson Lamet (RHP - SD) owns a 2.50 ERA/3.42 xERA over his last three starts. The TJS velocity uptick is evident; as he’s been sitting 95-96 of late. Readers of this space know we have been touting Lamet since he arrived back in 2017. Following that promising rookie campaign, Lamet underwent Tommy John surgery in April of 2018, which cost him the entire season and the first half of 2019 as well. He's back now and looking great, as he's whiffed 55 batters in 41 innings over his first eight starts, including a 12 K performance two starts back and rock solid performances against the Dodgers, Braves and Phillies. Dude comes in with a 15% swing & miss rate, which is in the top 5% off all MLB starters. His stuff is filthy and he’s under the radar.
