5:10 PM EST. Let’s try this one more time. We faded the Yanks (and Red Sox) upon their return from overseas, citing that exhaustion was a distinct possibility. We cashed our ticket on the Mets that night but failed to do so with the Red Sox. However, as a -250 fav last night in Toronto, Boston lost and we regret not “sticking with it”. The Yanks went on to beat the Mets last night 5-1 and now this is the second series back for New York since their trip to the U.K.

To recap, the Yankees played the Blue Jays three times before going to London and two of the games were marathons while all three came right down to the final out. The next day, the Yanks arrived in London and played their biggest rivals, the Red Sox for two more marathons on Saturday and Sunday. They won both games and then flew back to New York for their “Subway Series” with the Mets. That’s back-to-back series with Boston and the Mets, not to mention a trip to and from the U.K. Now forced to travel again, the Yanks will play in Tampa for three with the All-Star break on deck, meaning a bunch of their players will have no break. We have no idea what’s going to happen in this game but we have a definite understanding of which team is in a massively better situational spot. Remember, the Yanks have a somewhat comfortable 6½-game lead in the AL East but more importantly, they need a break/rest more than any team in baseball.

Finally, more people from Tampa would rather go to the Dali Museum than sit inside at the Trop (worst stadium in the game and it’s not even close) and watch a baseball game. However, when the Yanks come to town, it’s an attraction so figure the Rays to be extra jacked up here to play in front of a rare crowd. The Rays are among the best teams in baseball, they’re in a great spot and they have no excuse for losing in this spot to J.A. Happ (LHP - NYY) and the exhausted Yanks.
