7:15 PM EST. We understand that the Marlins are a weak team but they have been highly competitive in the first two games of this series with an easy win on Tuesday followed by an extra-inning loss last night. Furthermore, on what planet would we be prepared to spot nearly 2-1 with Adam Wainwright (RHP - ST. L) starting? Not Earth, we can assure you of that. If the Cards and Wainwright win here, good for them but this is another great value bet.

Wainwright comes off the 10-day injured list due to a mild left hamstring strain. Wainwright remains a shell of his former self. Elbow issues that ended his 2017 campaign never left. He was first shelved in April of last year, and then again in May for three months. In the off-season, Wainwright couldn’t get a deal with anyone so he signed with the Cardinals for one year for 2M, which is the equivalent of minimum wage in this day and age. He comes into this start with a BB/K split of 31/61 in 71 frames. His fastball now tops off at 89 MPH and he has a swing & miss rate of 8%. With a weak xERA of 4.97 over his last six starts (4.66 actual overall ERA) and a weak profile, at best, Wainwright is a fifth starter that is priced like he’s Justin Verlander.

Zac Gallen (RHP - MIA) is a 6-foot-2, 23-year-old right-handed pitcher who has carved up the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this year. He is 9-1 with a 1.77 ERA over 14 starts at Triple A, striking out a minor-league best 112 batters while walking just 17 in 91.1 innings. He threw at least six innings in all but three of his starts this year. Remember, that was in the PCL!

Gallen gets results without plus stuff. His upper-80s cutter has been his bread-and-butter pitch, and he works it to both sides of the plate with the ability to backdoor it for strikes against left-handers. His low-90s fastball tops out at 94 but plays up because he creates downward plane and commands his heater well. Gallen also keeps hitters off balance by varying the speed on his changeup and curveball, with the latter a slightly better offering. He does a nice job of repeating his clean delivery, allowing him to fill the bottom of the strike zone. He has one of the highest floors among the organization’s pitching prospects. A third-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016, Gallen found himself in the Miami Marlins organization by way of the Marcell Ozuna trade in December. Ironically, he’ll now make his MLB debut against the team that traded him. There is of course risk in getting behind a first-timer but the risk is worth the reward. This kid can pitch like there’s no tomorrow.
