8:10 PM EST. We’re not gung-ho over Tommy Milone (LHP) so let’s get that out of the way immediately but his stock is low and he’s showing some upside, which has peaked our interest. Milone was whacked in his last start v Atlanta but he didn’t walk anyone and ran into some bad luck, as almost every ball hit seemed to find a hole. Milone has not walked a single batter in three starts covering 18 frames and he has 19 K’s over that span with a the support of a 14% swing and miss rate. Milone bring and ugly 5.50 surface ERA into this game but his xERA of 3.59 is a more accurate account of how well he’s been pitching. Milone will keep hitter’s off balance and will face a rather unthreatening group here.

Miles Mikolas (RHP) sported a 5.32 ERA in 91 innings as a major leaguer from 2012-14 before departing for Japan where he compiled a 2.18 ERA in 425 innings from 2015-17. Through 144 innings in 2018, he owns a superb 2.74 ERA but we’re not buying it. Mikolas has improved greatly but an ace he is not. He induces groundballs at a good rate and has pinpoint control but he has struck out a mere 17 batters over his past 29 frames and has struck out just 98 in 144 frames overall. Mikolas’ swing and miss rate is a weak 9% and it was 6% in his last start. His xERA of 3.92 is more than a full run higher than his actual ERA. We’re not suggesting Mikolas is a fluke or that he’s not any good. He’s one of these serviceable pitchers that put the ball in play and induces grounders, very much like Marcus Stroman of the Blue Jays. In fact, Stroman and Mikolas are mirror images of one another and Stroman has gotten blasted plenty of times this year because those batted balls found holes. The Nationals are coming on and capable of defeating anyone at any time and we’ll gladly take the tag on them here.
