Old Dominion +149 over Georgia Southern
Streaming: ESPN2
7:30 PM EST. Somebody explain why a 2-4 Georgia Southern team is laying more than a field goal on the road against an Old Dominion squad with one of the better defenses in the Sun Belt. The Eagles have lost four of their last five, their defense continues to give up far too many successful plays, and their quarterback has been considerably less effective away from home. Yet the market has pushed Georgia Southern from a 2½-point favorite to as high as four. Apparently, throwing the football 40 times a game is enough to earn some respect, regardless of the results.
Old Dominion's offense isn't pretty. In fact, calling it ugly might be insulting to ugly offenses everywhere. The Monarchs rank dead last nationally in offensive Success Rate, quarterback Quinn Henicle has been erratic, and the passing game has offered very little. Nobody is confusing this group with an offensive juggernaut. But that's precisely why the price is attractive. The market has become so focused on Old Dominion's offensive shortcomings that it's overlooking a defense capable of controlling this matchup.
The Monarchs rank among the nation's top 10 in defensive Success Rate, and that unit has been carrying the program. They recently held Appalachian State to just 158 total yards in a 10-3 victory, forcing three turnovers and demonstrating how effective they can be when games become physical, low-scoring affairs. Linebacker Jackson Forrest and edge rusher Mario Thompson anchor a defense that has consistently made opposing offenses work for everything.
Georgia Southern's offense presents a different challenge, but it's hardly without weaknesses. Max Johnson has thrown for 1,572 yards, yet 908 of those came in three home games. Seven of his 11 touchdown passes have also come in Statesboro. The Eagles throw on nearly 60% of their offensive plays, but their passing attack relies heavily on shorter routes rather than consistently threatening defenses downfield. That's an important distinction against an Old Dominion defense that has been particularly effective at limiting passing efficiency.
The Eagles' defense isn't exactly a source of comfort, either. Georgia Southern ranks 106th nationally in defensive Success Rate allowed, surrendering successful plays on 47.4% of opponents' snaps. That's an inviting matchup even for an Old Dominion offense that has struggled to move the football. The Monarchs have demonstrated they can lean on Devin Roche and Henicle in the running game, and their recent commitment to controlling possession provides a sensible alternative to asking an unreliable passing attack to carry the offense.
There's also a significant situational element here. Georgia Southern is traveling on a short week for a Thursday night conference game, while Old Dominion returns home with some momentum following its defensive performance against Appalachian State. It's also a special evening in Norfolk, with Taylor Heinicke's number being retired. The ceremony doesn't score touchdowns, but it certainly adds to the atmosphere surrounding a nationally televised home game.
The betting market has already pushed Georgia Southern beyond a field-goal favorite, even though the Eagles have substantial defensive issues and their quarterback has been less productive on the road. Old Dominion's offensive limitations are obvious, but its defensive advantage is real, and that makes this a much more competitive matchup than the moneyline suggests.
At +149, Old Dominion needs to win only 40.2% of the time to justify the wager. That's an appealing price on a home team with the stronger defense against a road favorite that hasn't demonstrated enough consistency to deserve this level of market confidence. The Monarchs aren't pretty, but pretty doesn't pay at the betting window. Price does, and Old Dominion is the side offering it.
