HAWAII +6½ over San Diego State

11:00 PM ET. There is a classic zig-zag element baked right into this matchup. Last week, Hawaii walked into San Jose as a public underdog — a trendy pooch — catching a short number from a 2–6 Spartans team. The Warriors had been an ATS dynamo heading into that tilt, covering four straight and sitting 6–2 at the window. Naturally, the consensus piled onto the Rainbow Warriors and naturally, they fell short by a touchdown.

Now the market has flipped entirely in the opposite direction. Hawaii returns home to host 7–1 San Diego State — an ATS darling, another team with stock inflated by consistent cashes — and once again the market is rushing to the obvious conclusion: Aztecs roll. However, we urge those with that idea to proceed with caution. Backing the Tecs is laying points with a team who is prone to overlays against a team on the back-end of a zig-zag that leads to inflated points upon inflated points.

This will also be a charged environment as the faithful will be out in droves and the game is sold out. Anyone who follows Mountain West football knows how difficult it is to survive a night in Honolulu when the locals smell opportunity. Hawaii’s Mountain West hopes aren’t dead. A win here keeps them alive and brings out the absolute best from the Islands’ home crowd. That alone neutralizes part of San Diego State’s perceived edge.

If anyone believes the Aztecs can’t be clipped on the road, the evidence says otherwise. They narrowly escaped two-win Northern Illinois in DeKalb earlier this season — a 6–3 rock fight that left more questions than answers. Even more telling: they were smoked by Washington State, a team that was just embarrassed by one-win Oregon State last week. San Diego State is not immune to playing down to competition, especially away from home.

Hawaii may not be a powerhouse, but they’re much better than what they have been in recent memory. When SDSU faces an upstart opponent with a pulse and a crowd behind them, they’ve shown the ability to wobble. The Warriors have the profile of a team that can drag this into four quarters and force the Aztecs into uncomfortable territory.

San Diego State is laying an inflated number in a volatile, perilous road spot. That makes a Hawaii money line play worth a look. But we don’t need the outright — though it’s very much on the table. We’ll take the points and challenge the Aztecs to beat us.
