The Bears were +5000 to win the Big 12 in the summer of 2021 and in spite of this, shocked Oklahoma, defeated Texas, avenged a loss to Oklahoma State, won the conference chip, and defeated a top-10 ranked Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl to close out an incredulous year. The Bears also defeated a #19-ranked BYU in Waco, and with all of the fanfare surrounding the Bears in 2022, the market is back for more.

Unlike Baylor, Brigham Young concluded 2021 on a bitter note when they found themselves playing in the Independence Bowl in mid-December when they had designs of a New Year’s Six bowl after knocking off Utah in The Holy War to start off their season. This of course layered on top of 2020 when such a goal ultimately eluded them by a yard when they were undefeated and ultimately fell at Coastal Carolina. As a result of the detour in 2021, the Cougars found themselves on the wrong side of an upset bid at the hands of UAB and with that, the Cougars vanished into the abyss while the betting world continues to marvel in the Bears, which has carried the pandemonium over into 2022.

Despite all the praises sung concerning Baylor, the #8 Bears are taking back a tag against the BYU Cougars who were not even ranked in Week 1. We had hoped the Cougs would have stayed out of the Top 25 in Week 2 because that would have made this play even more tasty with a top-10 side priced as a pooch to an unranked side, but nevertheless it still has value. For what it’s worth, oddsmakers had priced the Cougars as the favorite in this game before the Week 2 rankings materialized. That in itself suggests that the books are taking a strong position here. When we consider each outfit’s market credibility as of recent, this nudges us even more to take a closer look at BYU. This line is not an early gift. Instead, it speaks volumes into the respect that oddsmakers give to BYU in its own stead and reinforces the premise that one cannot play results nor is it advised to jump on a team too late. A bet on Baylor here does all of that. Yesterday, BYU was -3½ and today, that number has come off and went under a key number. We cannot stress enough how BYU checks so many boxes here and we also love that it is the late game (bailout game) on ESPN. The price may even drop more.
