Both Clemson and Iowa State had disappointing 2021 campaigns after the Tigers qualified for the College Football Playoff in 2020 and Iowa State nabbed a New Year’s Six Bowl Win in the Fiesta Bowl against Oregon. Both the ‘Clones and the Tigers were expected to be key players in the race for their respective conferences this season. The Tigers were garnered both an ACC and playoff lock in the preseason while the Cyclones were picked by some to win the Big 12 and emerge as a dark horse in the playoff race. None of these extrapolations ever materialized and now both parties find themselves facing off before New Year’s Eve. The question is who will come to this venue with more pep in their step? The line gives us a clue.

Clemson is a team that needs no introduction, its reputation precedes it. When we consider Clemson’s pedigree overall, the mechanics are optimal for us to take a closer look at Iowa State, as this is not a venue one would normally find the Tigers participating in and that undoubtedly is affecting the way the Tigers approach this game. The point is that a program that has such lofty expectations on an annual basis anticipates to be playing in high-profile contests, thus, it’s hard to imagine the Tigers getting up here to play in a bowl game named after a cracker against a “mid-tier opponent”. Furthermore, even if the Tigers show up with all hands on deck, they’ll be facing an Iowa State squad that was in the top 10 at one point this season. This is no middling Mountain West team being offered up as a sacrificial lamb to Dabo Swinney.

Sure, Iowa State may very well be without their best player (RB Breece Hall) but the rest of the Cyclones are playing and this line was presented after the news of the Hall opt-out broke. For the Cyclones, a win against one of College Football’s giants is one that is monumental for the program while there is no prestige to gain for the Tigers. For Clemson, this is a weak consolation prize. Give some big intangible edges to the Cyclones and then bet them to win outright.
