WEST VIRGINIA -1½ over Virginia Tech

Milan Puskar Stadium – Morgantown, WV

Streaming: Fox Sports 1 (FS1)

12:00 PM EST. Anytime we see an unranked team spotting points to a ranked opponent, the unranked favorite catches our attention. In our goal to detect value, we must understand the mechanics to truly appreciate the situation. When we consider recency bias and market credibility, the field goal seems that much more appealing with the Hokies considering West Virginia’s résumé is less than captivating.

Virginia Tech played host to then No. 9 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in Blacksburg in Week One. UNC had come into the 2021-22 season as one of the trendier sides after they managed to make it to a New Year’s Six Bowl under legendary Head Coach Mack Brown and returned a gunslinger quarterback in Sam Howell, who many had pegged for the Heisman discussion. Despite all the hype and hoopla surrounding the Tar Heels, it was the Hokies who stole the show when they upset North Carolina in a Friday Night Primetime match-up. Since then, the Gobblers dispatched Mid Tennessee State in Week Two with relative ease and covered while doing so and they also happened to help themselves to a top-15 ranking in their exploits. In a nutshell, Va Tech’s recent results have accentuated their market credibility. West Virginia on the other hand, not so much the case.

The Mountaineers opened the season with a 30-24 loss on the road at the hands of Maryland. The same Maryland team that squeezed by Illinois last night in a nationally televised game. That’s not a good look for the Mounties. The Terps didn’t cover last night and were never really in a position to. Anyway, WVU was a -3 point choice over the Terps. In essence, Country Roads was spotting a similar number as they are in this one to a perceived inferior team on paper and came up flat. When we also consider that West Virginia’s only win this season came against a FCS cupcake in Long Island University, the ranked and undefeated Hokies seem like a bargain here. They’re not. You see, Va Tech is actually -12 yards per game in its first two games. As a 20-point choice last week against Mid-Tennessee, the Hokies slightly out-yarded the Blue Raiders by a count of 383 to 348 and also held a slight edge in first downs 24-20. So, while most of the market feasts on a falsely ranked team, we’re selling on the Hokies before they drop out of the rankings. You should to.

Note: We are selling points here at BET365, as they are offering up WVU at -2½ +100.
