Texas Southern +19½ over BYU

9:00 PM EST. The Cougars are 4-0 and own one of the year’s most resonating wins when they swept the floor with Oregon in a 81-49 romp. That win elevated BYU into the national rankings, where they sit as the 19th ranked team in the country. We don’t know whether Oregon came up lame or BYU just had a flawless game but what we do know is that the COugars are very overpriced here against a foe that can come in under this price against any college team in America. Incidentally, BYU’s other victories were against Division II, Central Methodist, San Diego State by six and Cleveland State by 10. 

Texas Southern has a great chance to represent the SWAC in March at the Big Dance. Coach Johnny Jones and the Tigers marched all the way to the *second* round of the NCAA Tournament, Jones’ first appearance on the dance floor since 2015 (LSU). ome coaches put shooting on the highest pedestal. In today’s world, that’s becoming the norm. Johnny Jones, cordially, disagrees. He subscribes to a different theory; Offensive rebounding….

His Tigers consistently deliver on that mission. In conference games last season, Texas Southern secured one out of every three missed shots. That’s what’s called terrorizing the offensive glass. That marked the third year in a row the Tigers set the SWAC standard for offensive rebounding proficiency. And with this roster, there’s no reason that won’t continue. 

Texas Southern is 0-5. They play Louisiana Tech a week from today and then they’ll play #23 Florida. They’ll also open with 13 straight road games so when conference play starts, they just might be the most undervalued team in the country due to what figures to be a weak record. Keep your eye on this team for value and don’t be concerned if this one does not cash. We’ll get it back with interest if we stick with this team. Texas Southern has played Oregon, Washington, St. Mary’s, Air Force and N.C. State to make up for the 24th ranked Strength of Schedule in the country. While this 0-5 team may look weak due to its record, they are not. They’ll get second chance points tonight and they’ll be competitive like they almost always are. but this team’s identity lies in the front court, as it has every season under Jones’ watch. Texas Southern is not a power conference team but they’re damn close playing like one. Most importantly, we’re being offered an abundance of inflated points here.
