Notre Dame -4 over Texas A&M

11:30 PM EST. While Notre Dame was beating Chaminade yesterday in what was essentially a glorified practice, Texas A&M was disposing of Butler, a well known mid-major with pedigree. The Aggies are now 5-1 with a victory over Butler while the Irish are 3-1 with victories over Chaminade, CSU Northridge and High Point. Furthermore, in the opening round of the Maui Invitational, A&M lost to Wisconsin with that loss looking much better now after the Badgers beat #15 Houston yesterday. Houston was a big favorite to win the Maui. All of the above sets up Notre Dame to be underpriced here. 

The Aggies win over Butler yesterday was a complete slopfest. Butler missed open shot after open shot because they have no shooters and because a couple of key players were injured. Texas A&M was up by a lousy three points with under 2 minutes to go so the final score of 57-50 was a little misleading. In the first half, Butler scored 21 lousy points and were still in a position to win.  

The Aggies lost eight players to the transfer portal this offseason and although they added some talent, they are rebuilding. The Aggies 5-1 record looks good on paper but it has just one win against a team inside the top 200 in Abilene Christian, who they beat by one point in double overtime. Butler, too, is ranked inside the top-200 but it doesn’t really count because the Bulldogs were missing players and were up against it yesterday. 

Saint Mary’s is the clear favorite to win the Maui now after they knocked off Oregon and Houston lost to Wisky. We mention that because Notre Dame lost to the Gaels by just three points in the opener and easily could have won. Notre Dame’s stock is not high after finishing below .500 in two of the last three seasons. However, this year’s team has the talent to make the NCAA Tournament, as it ranks 90th in defensive efficiency and 10th in offensive efficiency. Notre Dame returns eight of its top 10 players from last year, led by Prentiss Hubb and Dane Goodwin. The program’s lone transfer, Paul Atkinson, was the 2019-20 Ivy League Player of the Year with Yale. So far this year, he leads the team in scoring and is second in rebounding. Looking at results only, this one may appear close on paper but it’s not. The Irish are the vastly superior team but are not priced like it.
