Hofstra +6½ over IONA

Of course Iona is 2-0 under Rick Pitino to start the season and that’s because it is rare for this POS to schedule a game against a team he might lose to, at least that’s what his philosophy was at Louisville because with a good but misleading record, a team like Louisville could get an at-large bid. By contrast, a team like Iona has one way and one way only of getting into the tournament in March, which is an automatic bid by winning the conference championship. Thus, it’s not as important for Pitino to go 15-0 against dregs. It is more important for him to get his team ready to pull off an upset or two in March so he’s scheduled games against some tougher competition. We’d be remiss not to mention that Iona is far and above the class of the MAAC and it would take a miracle of sorts for the Gaels not to earn an automatic bid by way of a conference championship.  There is virtually no chance for a MAAC team to earn an at-large bid so Pitino can gamble a bit with games against very tough competition. Trust us, if he were still coaching Louisville, he would not have scheduled a game against Hofstra, instead, he would be playing Kennesaw St. today. 

Hofstra is 1-1 after beating Duquesne and losing to #15 Houston in OT. So, while Iona’s Strength of Schedule ranks 295th after two games, Hofstra’s ranks 64th. In fact, the Pride could easily be 2-0 with a victory over a ranked team. Hofstra is absolutely one of the favorites to win the CAA this season. The Pride have a ton of talent returning, a ton of talent coming in through the portal, and a coach who knows the program inside and out (All-time Hofstra basketball great Speedy Claxton) who served under Joe Mihalich for seven seasons. Claxton has been quoted in a few places saying he will largely maintain a similar offense to Mihalich. Mihalich had six straight top 75 offenses, per KenPom, leading up to his NCAA Tourney squad in 2020. Hofstra is one of the heaviest pick-n-roll teams in the country, and Claxton has a treasure chest of guards to use in that system. The goal of the Pride’s attack is simple: get good shots. 

This line is predicated on a lot of hype surrounding Pitino and his can’t miss team winning the MAAC. To that we say big deal. KenPom has Hofstra ranked 10 spots higher than Iona and that’s conservative because it should probably be 20 spots higher. The spot and price here is fairly strong for a Hofstra team that can and should win outright. Win, lose or draw, the points are inflated.
