From coach Jason Gardner’s drunk driving arrest (ultimately leading to his exile) to Bryon Rimm’s multi-year ‘interim’ head coaching tenure, the writing was on the wall and the athletic department at IUPUI was antsy to turn the page, which they did, when they brought in Matt Crenshaw, a legend of sorts around the Indianapolis community, responsible for lifting the Jaguars to their first and only NCAA tournament appearance. 

Crenshaw has unveiled his master plan in reviving the talent crop, “We want to put the fence up,” he told the Indianapolis Recorder. “We want to lock down the state of Indiana, the city of Indianapolis.”  Crenshaw is installing a high-octane offense, characterized by speed, spacing and shooting and while IUPUI is 0-2 to start the year, they have played Butler (lost by just nine) and also played an established program (Evansville) from the Missouri Valley. It has been said that IUPUI’s defense is very good. 

The market is not in love with an 0-2 Jaguars’ team that is favored against a 1-1 team. Pulling the trigger on unknown chalk is a difficult task but it’s precisely what we’re looking for. For one, KenPom has IUPUI ranked higher than Denver and although it’s only two games, IUPUI’s Strength of Schedule ranks 101st in the country while Denver’s ranks 350th after two games. This game will also take place on a neutral floor in San Antonio, Texas.

Thus far, the Pioneers have played two Division II teams in Ottawa University (Kansas) and Regis University in Denver Colorado. They didn’t even win both games, as they lost to Ottawa 72-71 but were down by 17 points at one point in the second half. The Pioneers then beat Regis by a lousy three points (one possession). The Denver Pioneers could easily be 0-2 against two Division II teams and today we get a vastly superior squad to beat them at a drastically reduced price.
