SIENA -5 -107 over Quinnipiac

2:00 PM EST. It was just two days ago when we recommended a play on Quinnipiac (-4½) when they beat Fairfield by 14. The Bobcats were an underpriced favorite on Friday but today they are an overpriced underdog. You see, the Bobcats do not travel well. They are a team with a 10-7 record but have only played six games on the road the entire season. Two of their road games occurred in their first two games of the season back on November 13th and 16th respectively. They lost both those games and have only won once on the road this entire year. Quinny’s last road game was 10 days ago at Manhattan and they lost that one by 12 points. When a team travels so infrequently, it’s a treat to do so and it’s also a time to have some fun. This visitor has shown a lack of focus on the road, thus allowing us to attack them at a reduced rate. Incidentally, Quinnipiac’s Strength of Schedule (SOS) ranks 344th in the country and yet they are still just a 10-7 team.

Siena’s 8-9 record is obviously worse than Quinnipiac’s 10-7 record but because so much emphasis is put on wins and losses, we get the chalk here at a bargain. Siena has played the 177th ranked Strength of Schedule in the country, which is 167 positions higher than this opponents SOS. Without going into all the details, the Saints promoted Carmen Maciariello to the head coaching throne. As a local high school legend from upstate New York and former Director of Basketball Operations at Siena during the glory days of Fran McCaffery, this is a special opportunity for Maciariello. He has every intent on putting his fingerprints on the program, which is becoming abundantly evident in how the Saints are starting to play. In short, ‘fast’ and ‘position-less’ are the two prevailing descriptors, traits that were in no way applicable to last year’s team. Maciariello’s vision to play position-less, up-tempo basketball is meshing well with the rest of this revamped roster, which is light years more athletic than last season. Siena is coming off a 13-point win over Marist. They have played nine road games, which included four straight from Nov. 14th until Dec. 7th. They are just starting to reap the rewards of bonding on the road under a new system while the recruiting by last year's coach, Jamion Christian is starting to pay dividends as well. Incidentally, Christian left on his own (for the A-10) and was not fired. Make no mistake that the price here on Siena is a bargain.
