Brooks Koepka +149 over Dustin Johnson

8:25 AM EST. As you may or may not know, the Masters is next week. To the best golfers in the world, this week is more of a glorified practice round or four to get their game in order. It is highly unlikely that Dustin Johnson is thinking/or focusing on this event. You see, DJ is scheduled to make his first start since a positive COVID-19 diagnosis just prior to the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas. He withdrew from that tournament but has not played on tour since Sept 7th at the U.S. Open, an event he won. In fact, the World #1 has finished first or second in four consecutive events so his stock is through the roof.

DJ’s golf game is not the issue here. The issue is that you cannot take the human element out of anything. The issue is that he’s been off for two months with the most prestigious sporting event/golf tournament up next week. The issue is DJ’s focus and lack thereof, as he mentally prepares for next week. Aside from that, we have no idea how he’s feeling after a bout with COVID.

The argument here is that the same lack of focus should apply to Brooks Koepka and maybe even more so because Brooks is well-known for bringing his A game to the majors and B game everywhere else. That would be a valid argument if this event was anywhere else but here’s a nugget you might not be aware of. You see, Koepka acted as a major consultant for the renovation work last year at this course. In other words, he was heavily involved in the remodelling of Memorial Park.

It’s human nature that his idea of what constitutes a good golf course would play to his strengths, and as a four-time major champion you suspect that philosophy relates to a stern test of credentials. Koepka has spent plenty of time at Memorial Park, has no doubt played a few rounds and surely has an edge on the field in that regard. In the past, Brooks has shown a penchant for timing his run to major glory well and it’s no coincidence that he signed up for this event. Koepka hasn’t played much competitive golf of late, and ordinarily, that would be a turn-off but this is a golf course he has intimate knowledge of. With motivation in plentiful supply, one would expect a very strong effort from Koepka this week. You could play Brooks over Tony Finau (+105), Hideki (+114) or Tyrell Hatton (+116) and they are all good bets but we’re going to take the biggest price of all (Risking 2 units)
