Hamilton +110 over Toronto

1:00 PM EST. We could break down the X’s and O’s on this rainy Labour Day Classic but that would be an exercise in futility. What the market is acutely aware of is that the Tiger-Cats are reeling with just three wins in 11 games including losing two in a row and three of four and that Hamilton is forced to start third string QB, Jamie Newman while Matt Shiltz and Dane Evans deal with injuries. Evans is limited by a still recovering sore shoulder but reports say that he will be available if absolutely necessary.

Now that we have established that Hamilton is forced to use a third string QB, we can understand the market reaction to fade them. First time QB’s in this league have rarely performed well but we don’t care, as we’ll reiterate that we’re not in the prediction business. Hamilton opened as a -2 point choice but the efficient market has spoken to drive this number to the price you are seeing now.

As for Jamie Newman, well, he just might happen to be the best QB that the Tiger-Cats have not used yet and this is a chance for him to prove it. Newman redshirted his first year at Wake Forest in 2016. As a backup to John Wolford in 2017, he only threw four passes. Newman entered 2018 as backup to Sam Hartman, but started the final four games after Hartman was hurt. He was named the 2018 Birmingham Bowl MVP after throwing for 328 yards and a touchdown. Newman beat out Hartman for the starting job entering 2019. In 2019 he threw for over 2800 yards and 26 TD’s in 12 games.

The Georgia Bulldogs are always one of the best teams in college football and you have to be pretty damn good to play for them. Well, in January 2020, Newman announced that he would transfer to Georgia for his final year of eligibility, but in September, Newman announced that he would be opting out of the 2020 season due to concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, Newman did not take a single snap with the Bulldogs. Still, the Dawgs wanted him and it’s also worth noting that he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2021 but was released prior to the season despite a decent camp. Jamie Newman has paid his dues and he’s actually been the victim of circumstances. When he’s played, no matter where, he has thrived and this is just another opportunity for him to do the same. Regardless, the value here is on the Ticats, a team that is 3-8 but also a team that has allowed many 4th quarter leads to slip away.
