Edmonton +6½ over CALGARY

4:30 PM EST. The Elks have had a turbulent few weeks after their game against the Argonauts was postponed after a COVID outbreak ripped through the team. The rescheduling of that game had the Elks sitting idle since August 19, when they defeated the B.C. Lions. With the 60th Labour Day Classic (LDC) in Calgary on deck, there will be no rest for the formally sick and weary, as the Elks will be thrown to the wolves or horses if you prefer.

Much like the Blue Bombers recent history in Regina, the Elks have not fared well in the Stampede City with eight straight LDC losses at McMahon Stadium. Does that matter much here? Other than to influence the market, we doubt it. There are a dozen reasons one could find to bet against Edmonton today, but few of them outweigh the reasons why one should back the Elks.

Edmonton's stock is low after a disappointing start to the season and its long layoff after over a year on the sidelines seems to have resonated in this market. The Elks were taking back a modest field goal when oddsmakers posted this game on the board, but as you can see, that number has increased significantly. No offense intended to the home side here, but why? The Stampeders were hoping to welcome back star quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, but that will not happen this week, so it's not like his return is driving this price up. Rookie Jake Maier will line up under center for his first Labour Day Classic and it is impossible to know how he will play when the pressure is at its highest. Labour Day is not an easy day for the best pivots in this league, home-field advantage or not. Just ask Cody Fajardo of the Roughriders how he's feeling today.

These two Alberta rivals have combined for two wins through five total games and because of that, we'd have a hard time spotting a touchdown or more with either side regardless of location. They could play this game in Jake Maier’s backyard with his mom as the referee and we still wouldn't spot this price with the Stamps. The football world watched the Stamps hang around with the mighty Blue Bombers in Week 4 and we probably weren't the only ones who thought they should have won that game. Calgary's stock no doubt got a boost after Winnipeg's big win yesterday in what TSN called a battle of the "CFL's two best teams." However, now the Stamps are priced like they are the dominant team and that is not right. As with Winnipeg yesterday, the table is set here for another upset, as Edmonton might seriously be the best in the CFL. Big overlay.
