Seattle -1½ +150 over Texas

8:05 PM EST. Logan Gilbert (RHP - SEA) was terrific again in his last start, facing the minimum number of hitters through four innings before the Reds put up one lousy run in the fifth, marking Gilbert's second win and third quality start of the season. Gilbert now posts a 0.78 WHIP with 29 strikeouts to just four walks in 27 innings. That sub-1.00 WHIP is the third-best in the majors among all pitchers who have thrown 20 innings. Gilbert is arguably one of the best pitchers in all of baseball, but he is not priced like it yet.

On the surface, Dane Dunning (RHP - TEX) looks to be having a solid start to the season. He’s 2-0 with an ERA of 3.91 and has 22 strikeouts in 23 innings. Not great, but certainly serviceable. However, some red flags in his underlying numbers might suggest that he’s been fortunate thus far. First, Dunning’s xERA is a bloated 6.21, and he sports a Batting Average of Balls in Play of .189, which suggests the defense behind him has bailed him out at a high clip. While the strikeouts are mostly there, so too are the walks, as he’s issued 13 free passes to those 22 Ks. Also concerning is the significant 12.2% drop in his first-pitch strike rate, which is at a career low of 51%, meaning he’s putting himself behind in the count, which makes life so much more difficult. A correction to the bad could be coming for Dunning, and we are going to test that hypothesis here. Play this one straight up if you like, but we see tremendous value in the Mariners laying the -1½ on the road at +150, and we’re going to go for the kill.
