Calgary +104 over Seattle

10:07 PM EST. OT Included. No question that the Kraken are tough as shoe leather. You will not find a team that works harder or wants to win more but their winning pace is not sustainable. For one, their goaltending is horrible. Secondly, they’re fighting their first wave of injury concerns. The Kraken have 123 man games lost due to injury, and the majority of those come from goaltender Chris Driedger and winger Joonas Donskoi, neither of whom has played through 46 games. The daily wear and tear has been manageable so far.

Defenseman Justin Schultz is week-to-week instead of day-to-day. Winger Jaden Schwartz is due to miss his seventh straight game. Center Matty Beniers left last game with a lower body injury and he’s doubtful for tonight. Prior to the Vancouver game, Yanni Gourde was questionable and so was Alex Wennberg and Andre Burakovsky. All three played against the Canucks but Burakovsky only played 12 minutes so maybe there is something nagging lingering. It is worth noting that Seattle had a big lead in that game (Kraken won 6-1) so perhaps the coach was just taking precautionary measures with Burakovsky. Regardless, Schwartz, Beniers and their best D-man, Schultz are very difficult to compensate for. Beniers absence leaves a hole in the middle, thus some line shuffling could also take place here.

The Flames were destroyed at home last night by Chicago, 5-1. That’s not going to sit well with anyone but it’s not like Calgary was badly outplayed. No, they ran into a super-hot, rookie goaltender that stopped 34 of 35 shots. Meanwhile, Jakob Markstrom hasn’t been able to come up with big saves all year. Getting on the road and getting right back on the ice tonight is probably the best thing for the Flames right now. This is not a weak Calgary team but it is a grossly underachieving one.

Dan Vladar and his 10-4-4 record will be in net tonight. Vladar is 4-0 in January and has played a much tougher group of opponents than Markstrom. We’re not suggesting that Vladar is the answer to Calgary’s goaltending woes but for whatever reason, the team wins a lot more games when he’s in goal but that’s not the main reason we’re getting behind the Flames here. We like that they’re coming off a humiliating home loss. We like that they have recent wins over Tampa 6-3, Dallas 6-5 and St. Louis 4-1. The Flames can score goals with the best of them. Calgary embarks on a crucial five-game trip starting with this one. Had they won last night perhaps there wouldn’t be the same urgency as there is tonight but this is a crucial game in order to set the tone for the trip and in their quest to make the playoffs. A strong effort can be expected.
