NHL Quarterfinals

Game 7

Calgary -1½ +130 over Dallas

9:30 PM EST. Regulation only. We wrote before Game 6 that the Stars would have to be lucky to win. Well, luck they had and win they did in that 4-2 final. That Game 6 in Dallas was tightly contested until the Stars broke a 2-2 tie in the second period. The Stars had given up their two goal lead from earlier in the game, but they did not give back this one, adding an empty netter with less than a minute to go.

The hero for Dallas was again Jake Ottinger, who Flames coach Darryl Sutter singled out as the Stars MVP. Coach Sutter is no stranger to Game 7’s having coached 10 in his career. Sutter’s teams are 7-3. The Flames have yet to find their high scoring ways of the regular season, but that does not mean that time is not coming. Calgary has been the dominant team through six games, and while the Stars have won three, they’ve yet to be the better team on the ice. There is no question that Game 6 was Dallas’ best but in the spirit of sticking with it, we’ll once again take the superior team and let the chips fall where they may.

The Saddledome will be rockin’ tonight, as it should be with arguably the most balanced team in the NHL ready to punch its ticket to the second round. The Flames were an offensive juggernaut during the season, while the Stars were the only team to qualify for the postseason that had a negative goal differential.

It’s been written that all the pressure is on the Flames here, which may be true, but that does not mean they won’t rise to the challenge. We said the same thing about the Oilers in advance of their Game 7 and Edmonton passed that test with flying colors. The Maple Leafs also passed that test but unfortunately they ran into a hot goalie.

The opportunity for an Oilers/Flames Round 2 matchup is an exciting proposition for the entire country.  The Flames should have been able to name their score in this series, but so far have not. It is only a matter of time before they hang a crooked number. If the Stars are able to keep pace and compete here, so be it but sometimes you just have to go with the best of it. Secretly, the Oilers are praying for Dallas. Go Flames go!
