Boston +104 over Pittsburgh
8:05 PM EST. OT included. We rode the Bruins on Tuesday based on their great play of late and they played a fantastic game, winning in overtime against the Blues, 3-2. Now that result, like many the B’s have posted the last couple of weeks, does not do them justice. They dictated the pace of play, outshot St. Louis 32-22 and if not for a -1 in the special teams department, the extra frame would not have been necessary. It’s no bother because we find the Bruins once again being disrespected by both the oddsmakers and this market.
As we pointed out on Tuesday night, the Bruins have been one of the best and most consistent teams in April, which is a pretty good time to heat up. We’ll give you a quick synopsis. Since the calendar turned just three weeks ago, Boston has been the #2 puck possession team in the NHL. If you want to shorten that window to the last two weeks (since April 7), the B’s are still second. If you just look at the last week, the Bruins are #3. That’s about as consistent as it gets and it’s not a bad place to start.
Enter the Penguins, who serve as fine fodder here if only because we are able to back Boston as the underdog. The B’s are a small pooch, but they are a pooch nonetheless. What has Pittsburgh done to deserve such respect, other than playing on their home ice? The Pens have been outshot in two straight games, including their 2-1 loss to these Bruins in Boston last time out and by the Islanders (39-28) in a game that totally flattered the flat footed Penguins (a 6-3 win). To add a little more salt to the wound, Pittsburgh has been outshot in four of its last five. That includes a 3-2 OT win against Nashville (35-30) and a 6-3 loss to Washington (43-32). When you are chasing the puck night after night, you are going to have a bad time. These Bruins, in their current form, are not a team you want to be chasing.
