Ottawa -½ +231 over ANAHEIM

4:00 PM EST. Regulation only. The Ducks are 10-7-3 and have absolutely been one of this year’s biggest surprises in the early going. The Ducks were flying under the radar for weeks but that is no longer the case so it’s a great time to sell. Anaheim is above .500 and one of this year’s biggest overachievers not because they’re good but because goaltending decides more games than anything else in this sport and Anaheim’s John Gibson is the cream of the crop. Anaheim ranks bottom five in several underlying predictive stats that reveal whether winning is sustainable or not. In the case of the Ducks, it is not because they are constantly getting outplayed. They rank 24th out of 32 teams in puck possession time in the offensive end during five-on-five play.

There isn’t a team in the NHL whose stock is lower than the Senators' stock right now. Ottawa has lost both games since returning from a COVID related hiatus that forced the cancellation of three of their games in succession. They returned with a 7-5 loss and a 6-3 loss to Colorado and San Jose respectively. They were tied 5-5 with the Avs in Colorado with two minutes left in the third and they were also tied with San Jose with nine minutes left in the third. Ottawa was clearly the better team v San Jose but couldn’t catch a break. Prior to their COVID breakout, the Sens demolished Pittsburgh 6-3 after losing to the Kings 2-0 but they outchanced L.A., 28-22.

Ottawa has dropped three in a row, nine of 10 and 14 of its past 17 games. Its stock is lower than Arizona’s but that’s bordering on absurd because this team can play. They have some great pieces in Ottawa. They also possess talent, speed and youth. Everything has fallen against them this year but make no mistake that this team is vastly superior than its record and they’re on the verge of paying off as a significantly underpriced commodity. We’ll happily put that to the test here.
