BOSTON -1½ +145 over Calgary

7:00 PM EST. The Bruins have won three straight by identical 5-2 scores over the Devils, Habs and Flyers respectively but it’s not just that. Those are just scores, which we pay little attention to because there isn’t a professional sport in the world that has more misleading results than hockey. Truth be told, the B’s have been playing outstanding hockey in the month of November and have the under the hood numbers to prove it. Boston did play in Philadelphia last night but it was its first game since November 14th, which was a six day rest. Playing back-to-backs after six days off is not a factor here for Boston. Instead, we’d be shocked if they weren’t raring to get back out there.

The same cannot be said for Calgary, which sets up this outstanding situational play. The Flames played last night at the Islanders in a ceremonial opening home game for the Islanders. The Flames won 5-2 but Calgary netted two empty netters to make it look like an easy win when it was anything but. Calgary took six minors in the game so they played shorthanded for 12 minutes. They were under siege in the third period but hung on thanks to great goaltending from Jacob Markstrom but here’s the kicker; Calgary was running on fumes in the third period and much of the second too and it’s almost unfair to ask them to perform at a high level here.

You see, today is Calgary’s 7th straight on the road since November 11. That’s seven road games in 10 days. It’s also the Flames third game in four days, fourth game in six days, fifth game in seven days and of course, the tail end of back-to-backs. This is a rare sequence of games for the exhausted Flames and it’s not like they're playing some shit ass team. No, they’re playing a team that ranks 3rd in puck possession time in the offensive end since November 1, a team that is warming up and a team that is full of energy after having six days off and playing last night. Dig in.
