Calgary -½ +165 over N.Y. ISLANDERS

7:30 PM EST. The Islanders spent their first 13 games of this season traveling around the league while the finishing touches were put on their brand new arena—on Long Island. UBS Arena is set to open its doors to the Isles after the second-longest road trip in NHL history, but we just can’t get all that excited for all that pomp and circumstance.

The Islanders are not supposed to be a team that has nice things—this is a team that should be playing in a barn that is soaked with decades worth of draft beer and where the cigarette smoke is so prominent that it’s a part of the foundation—you know—exactly what they had at Nassau Coliseum. The Barn is almost as identifiable as the NY on the front of those beautiful blue and orange sweaters. That building is where all the great Islanders’ moments of the past took place. Bossy, Potvin, Trottier, Nystrom, Smith—those dudes bled, drank, and burned heaters all the way to four straight Stanley Cups—all in THAT Barn.

Aside from the situation—which appears to be a doozy—the Islanders are near the bottom of the league in any underlying statistic you can name. Puck possession (28th), expected goals (22nd), high danger scoring chances (25th)—you get the point. Not only are the Islanders weary after a near six-week road trip, but they must also deal with all the bullshit that will come with cutting the ribbon on the new arena in Belmont. Too bad their hearts are 15 miles down the Southern State Parkway in the old Barn.

With the Islanders getting new digs, the Flames now have the great distinction of playing in the league’s oldest arena (not named Madison Square Garden). Ironic—dontcha think? MSG has gone through many revamps over the years to maintain a modern presentation—the Saddledome?—well, it was flooded in 2013, so it got a real good cleaning!

The Flames have played five straight on the road, but are 2-1-2—collecting points in four straight. The Flames are scoring in bunches, outpacing their opposition 11-4 over those four contests. While not every night is perfect, the Flames are getting pretty damn good goaltending almost every night—allowing just 34 goals all season. That’s good for the second-best mark in the league. When you have good goaltending, you have a chance to win every night. Jacob Markstrom has already posted five shutouts this year—including another in Buffalo where he stopped all 27 shots he faced on Thursday night. The chance to spoil the Islanders big night should be a role that Calgary will relish but more importantly, they’re the vastly superior team and it’s not by a small margin.
