Detroit -½ +210 over CHICAGO

8:05 PM EST. Regulation only. Chicago opened the year with back-to-back losses to Tampa Bay, which the market will excuse as being outclassed. The Blackhawks would go on to lose to Florida twice and again, the market will excuse it as being outclassed. What is not excusable, however, is allowing five goals against in every game for a total of 20 goals allowed. What’s also not excusable is coming into the season without a goaltending plan. Chicago has four goalies right now (meaning they have none) and all four would be third stringers or worse on most teams. The Blackhawks will roll the dice with Kevin Lankinen tonight, who allowed five goals on 28 shots in Tuesday night's 5-4 overtime loss to the Panthers. As the chalk, the Blackhawks must be faded.

Detroit opened the year with back-to-back games against Carolina. The Hurricanes are the best puck possession team in the NHL and Detroit beat them once. In their next two games, the Red Wings faced another puck-heavy team in the Columbus Blue Jackets and it may surprise you to learn that Detroit outplayed the Jackets not once but twice by outshooting them and outchancing them both games. Thing is, Detroit was so bad last year that the market is expecting little improvement and it’s something we have to try and take advantage of. Bookmakers kept dealing the Wings at huge numbers last season but Detroit wasn’t even good enough to keep games close so it could take advantage of a break or a strong performance between the pipes. Detroit was pretty much on everyone’s “Betting Blacklist” but we’re urging you to take them off that last.

Steve Yzerman brought in capable veterans like Bobby Ryan, Jon Merrill, Troy Stecher and Vlad Namestnikov to provide at least a little bit of depth. Thomas Greiss was signed to pair with Jonathan Bernier, giving Detroit a pretty decent goaltending partnership. Dylan Larkin is a stud. Paired with Filip Zadina (dude is very good), that top line can create. Detroit’s second line has been rough to deal with too. The Wings are still not a playoff team but they’re much better than they were last season and can absolutely offer great value in games like this.
