8:35 PM EST. The term “throwaway bet” originated 30 years ago when Buster Douglas was a 42-1 underdog against Mike Tyson. We mention that because we’re going to “throw away” a bet here too, only this one has a legit shot of winning. The price here on the Red Wings, win or lose, is insane.

Even if this wasn’t a great situational spot for the Red Wings, which it is, this bet would still have to be made because the price says so. On New Year’s day, the Dallas Stars did what so many have long thought laughable -- play an outdoor ice hockey game in Texas. It was more of a spectacle than anything else and it required every player, coach and assistant to be at the rink from very early in the morning until very late in the evening. There were media requests, ticket requests, friends and family to deal with and and everything else out of the norm that one can possibly think of and it all happened during the holiday season when things are generally not normal anyway.

The Stars rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win the Winter Classic in dramatic fashion in front of 100,000 peeps. Now the garbage Red Wings come in and all Dallas has to do to win this game is show up, just like Mike Tyson.

Look, Detroit is not as bad as the media makes them out to be. They just have weak goaltending and when goaltending is weak, it’s very difficult to win in this league. The Red Wings are coming off games against Florida, Tampa and San Jose. They had a lead in all three games and held on in their last against San Jose. They lost 2-1 to Tampa and 5-4 to Florida. It’s not unreasonable to suggest the Stars will be extremely flat here and off their game and subsequently get caught by a professional hockey team. Furthermore, this is hockey where we have seen teams get outshot 52-21 and win so to think Detroit cannot win this game is actually a bit absurd. It’s one lousy game in a very bad spot for Dallas and the price absolutely dictates that it must be played for a chance to win 10 units.
