Vegas -½ +126 over N.Y. RANGERS
7:08 PM EST. Regulation only. The Vegas Golden Knights are still an elite team despite a pedestrian 13-11-4 record. We like that this is the first game of a three-game trip through this region, as teams usually give it their best shot in the first game of a trip. That said, this is more about fading the Rangers but make no mistake that Vegas is underpriced.
Malcolm Subban gets the call for the Knights in goal and that’s one of the reasons we’re getting Vegas at a reduced rate. The other reason is that on paper, the Rangers look they’re playing better with nine out of a possible 10 points over their last five games, which includes picking up three out of a possible four points over the Thanksgiving weekend with an OT loss to the Bruins on Friday and a 4-0 win over the Devils on Saturday. We keep insisting that hockey is the most luck-driven sport of all and that hypothesis gets proven almost daily. See the Rangers 4-0 win over the Devils on Saturday? The Rags were short-handed 8 times (!) in that game and New Jersey went 0-8 on the PP. The last time the Rags took eight penalties in the same game was earlier in the month and they lost that game 9-3. The Rangers were down 4-0 to Montreal during this current run of success and came back to win 6-5. Rallying from four down happens every leap year. Truth be told, the Rags are the worst possession team in the NHL and it’s not even close.
You may remember about two to three weeks ago that the Blackhawks went on a hot run despite being outplayed every night but things have gotten back to normal for Chicago, as they’re losing almost every time out. You see, a team cannot get territorially massacred and keep winning hockey games for an extended period of time. The Rangers are on a similar luck-driven run right now and it’s going to catch up to them too.
