ANAHEIM-111 over Arizona

10:05 PM EST. OT included. The Coyotes big off-season move was swapping Phil Kessel for Alex Galchenyuk. Kessel is 32 years old and is being asked to “be the man” in Arizona after not being the man in Pittsburgh for so long. It’s a different role and we’ll see how he handles it. The Coyotes have a nice collection of under the radar players (Nick Schmaltz, Carl Soderberg, Conor Garland, Derek Stepan and Vinnie Hinostroza to name a few) but goaltending might be an issue (Darcy Kuemper starts tonight) and they always seem to get off to these horrendous starts. That said, the Coyotes are not our target here. This wager is more about getting behind the undervalued Ducks.

The Ducks are projected to finish last in the West or damn close to it and that makes them a strong buy low candidate. When we think of the Ducks, we think of this old aging team (ala Minnesota) but that’s actually not true at all. The Ducks will start the season with five forwards with fewer than 100 NHL games of experience apiece. Daniel Sprong and Troy Terry have mostly broken through already – during the second half of last season. Sam Steel, Max Comtois and Max Jones are all very close as well, each playing at least 10 games last season. These are highly energetic and talented rookies that gives this team a big boost. The Ducks still have Ryan Getzlaf, Adam Henrique, Richard Rakell, Jakob Silfverberg, Cam Fowler, Hampus Lindholm and Nick Ritchie to name a few so it’s not like they’re starting over. This is a really decent mixture of vets and youth. Look, the players read the tweets and projections too. Every player in that Ducks locker room is fully aware that expectations are very low. We love that because it’s motivating and will bring a big chip on their shoulders when they step on the ice for the opener. That’s not a bad thing. Oh, by the way, did we mention that the Ducks still have the best goaltender money can buy? Yeah, we’ll roll the dice here on the NHL’s most disrespected team coming into the opener.
