7:05 PM EST. Regulation only. Good spot for the ‘Canes in that the Maple Leafs clinched a playoff spot last night in Long Island while avenging that horrible loss to the Isles when an entire fan based turned on John Tavares three weeks earlier. Toronto accomplished two things last night and it’s also worth noting that Freddy Andersen returned to form and that’s likely the way Mike Babcock wants to leave him. In other words, one can expect Garret Sparks in net for Toronto. Sparks was the losing goaltender to Ottawa on Saturday night when he allowed three goals on 20 shots in a game the Leafs dominated. They won’t dominate this one because the Hurricanes do not get dominated. Playing the tail end of back-to-backs after an extremely important win last night, Toronto is vulnerable here.
The Hurricanes have been outshot and out-chanced once in their last nine games. That came against Tampa Bay where they were out-chanced by the narrowest of margins. We don’t have to go over the importance of this one and while we faded the Jackets in a must-win situation, this must win spot for the ‘Canes is entirely different because Carolina is not overpriced because of it. The Hurricanes have far less market appeal than Toronto (or Columbus for that matter) because they haven’t made the playoffs in nine years. That all changes this year starting with this one.
