7:05 PM EST. OT included Buy low, sell high is the mantra we keep over here and while it’s going to be two years or more before the Senators stock is high, Toronto’s stock is actually selling lower for this game than it should be. Certainly, you don’t need us to tell you how beatable the Sens are but just for notes, they rank dead last in Corsi For % during five-on-five play and rank near or at the bottom in many other analytic categories, which includes Scoring Chances For % (SCF%), meaning that is a very rare day when Ottawa creates more scoring chances than its opponent. Incidentally, Toronto ranks 7th in SCF% during five-on-five play.

The Maple Leafs defensive struggles have been well-documented over the past month to the point of it getting blown out of proportion. Toronto has allowed five goals against in back-to-back games to Florida and Philadelphia respectively and they have allowed five goals or more in six of its last nine games. The Maple Leafs have also lost six of their past nine. However, this is a great spot for the Maple Leafs to come out guns blazing and put a beatdown on the Sens and here’s why: Exactly two weeks ago on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, Toronto went into Ottawa and got smoked 6-2. That was the second game of back-to-backs for the Leafs after they put together a furious rally to beat Philadelphia the previous night, 7-6 in Toronto. The Leafs trailed 5-2 in that one. Toronto showed up in body only against the Senators and got torched. It’s one thing to lose to Ottawa but it’s quite another to lose by four goals. Arguably, it was the Leafs most embarrassing loss of the year and there is no chance of them allowing that to happen again. The Leafs also get Travis Dermott back for tonight’s game and he’ll add some stability to Toronto’s unstable defense. What we have here is Toronto’s response game on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada to getting blown out in Ottawa two weeks ago and frankly, we sure as hell wouldn’t want to be holding a ticket on Ottawa, as Mike Babcock and the Leafs prepare to get “right-sided” for the playoffs with just a week to go in the regular season.
