8:05 PM EST. OT included. The Jets are coming off a resounding 5-0 win over Nashville to cap off a current run that has seen them win five of their six games. Meanwhile, the Stars are coming off a 3-2 loss to the Penguins for their fourth loss in their last five games. What we have here is recency bias working and it looks like the Jets are playing well while the Stars are not but nothing could be further from the truth. Excluding results, the Stars are in much better form than Winnipeg is.

Since March 15th, a span of 18 games, Winnipeg ranks 29th in Corsi For % during five on five play with Dallas ranks 10th over that same span. Only the Devils and Red Wings have been worse than Winnipeg. In four of their last five games, the Jets have mustered a mere 15, 17, 23, 14 and 11 scoring chances respectively while being outchanced (and outshot) in all of those games. Winnipeg’s 2-1 win over calgary was hugely undersevering, as was their victories over Anaheim and Boston during this current run. Against Boston, Winnipeg was under siege for 60 minutes but won 4-3 despite getting outshot 40-24 and outchanced 27-13. The Jets only legit win was Saturday’s strong performance over Nashville in that aforementioned 5-0 victory. Incidentally, Saturday’s win came after a 5-0 loss to Vegas so that inspired performance was somewhat expected, as teams often rebound from an embarrassing loss.

By contrast, Dallas’ performances have been strong despite losing. They played the Pens tough on Saturday but lost 3-2. Prior, the Stars lost to Colorado 3-1 but held a massive Corsi For % edge and had 38 scoring chances to boot! The game before that Dallas beat Florida and  outchanced the Panthers 28-11! The game before that, Dallas outchanced Vancouver 26-13 and lost 3-2. We could go on and on about how the Stars are playing so well but keep running into hot goaltenders. They’ll now face a Winnipeg team this isn’t playing and that is still without Dustin Byfuglien and Josh Morrissey and that already atoned for its ugly loss to Vegas.
