1:05 PM EST. OT included. The Red Wings were true to their word yesterday, sending Filip Zadina back to the minor leagues after his nine-game stint in the NHL. Zadina would have burned a year of his entry-level contract by playing in an additional game, and could have become eligible for the 2021 expansion draft if he stayed any longer than that. Instead, he’ll rejoin the Grand Rapids Griffins for the end of the season. The good news is that Dylan Larkin will return to the lineup in Zadina’s place, two names that will surely be linked for the Red Wings moving forward. Larkin is the face of the franchise and the leader of the forward group, while Zadina represents the next wave of talent. His nine-game showcase was encouraging, and given the four high picks the Red Wings feature once again in this year’s draft, the future is starting to look quite bright in Detroit but that’s something we have been preaching all year. The Red Wings are truly a competitive team, whose performances this year have been so much better than their record. Detroit had the Lightning down 2-0 and 3-1 on Thursday but ended up losing another one late. No team in the NHL has more one goal losses than Detroit and no team has blown more third period leads. That’s how close Detroit has come to making the playoffs this year.

Maybe the Islanders win again here and maybe we’re gluttons for punishment but this line is so out of whack that it must be played. The Islanders luck ran out for a few games recently but then returned with a vengeance in back-to-back win over Columbus and Montreal by scores of 2-0 and 2-1 respectively. The Isles didn’t deserve either win but a combined six goalposts/crossbars among other lucky bounces allowed the Isles to escape. The Islanders are 4-4 over their past eight games with two losses to Philadelphia and two wins over Ottawa included in those eight. With a firm grip on a playoff spot and after just playing Montreal and Columbus (two teams desperately trying to get in) the Islanders could very well get caught taking a break here in this early afternoon start. They play in Minnesota tomorrow and then have games against Boston, Montreal and Philadelphia up next. Bad spot and overpriced, the Isles must be faded here.
